Asian Barbecue Shrimp Recipes

web analytics

Asian barbecue shrimp recipes with ingredients like teriyaki sauce are often associated with barbecue in the U.S., and in Japan with the cooking method of Yakitori.

But of course there's other Asian traditions of cooking over open flame that lend themselves to shrimp and to barbecuing. Satay, a meat dish that can be found on almost every street corner from Indonesia to the Philippines, is chunks or slices of any type of meat skewered on bamboo, grilled and then served with spicy seasonings.

What better way to introduce the marriage of shrimp, barbecuing and Asian flavors. On this page you'll find a list of Asian barbecue shrimp recipes and Asian-inspired shrimp barbecuing ideas, as well as a few hot and spicy Asian shrimp ideas -- at least until we build a separate page for those...

Note: Consider using large shrimp when you're barbecuing, although medium shrimp on skewers works well, and leave the tails on, so your dinner guests have a handle once they take the shrimp off the skewers. Be sure also to soak wood skewers in water at least 20 minutes before using. See our Barbecue Shrimp Recipe page for more barbecuing tips. Enjoy!

Recipes

Basic Asian-Inspired Barbecue Shrimp Recipe

  • 1 ½ to 2 pounds medium or large shrimp (medium: 35 to 40 per pound, large: 12 to 15 per pound)

Sauce

  • 2 cups teriyaki or hoi sin sauce
  • ½ cup chopped red onion
  • 1 tablespoon five-spice powder, curry powder or chili powder

To make the sauce

Combine sauce, onions and power in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until until onions become translucent. Let sauce cool or make in advance and store in fridge.

When ready to barbecue, let sauce warm to room temperature. For large shrimp, dip in sauce and lay on grilling rack. For medium shrimp, thread onto skewers and place on lipped baking sheet. Brush sauce on skewered shrimp and transfer skewers to grilling rack. Cook for about two minutes on each side, or until the shrimp turns translucent.

Optional: let shrimp marinate about ½ hour in sauce before grilling.

Optional: if you're skewering your shrimp, alternate shrimp with mushrooms, bell peppers and chopped red onions on the skewers.
